Is 2026 Finally Kenyan Football’s Big Year?

Posted on September 14, 2026September 14, 2026 By Admin No Comments on Is 2026 Finally Kenyan Football’s Big Year?

Kenyan football fans have had plenty to celebrate over the past few months, and the momentum shows no sign of slowing down as the new season gets underway. Between a historic domestic title win and a national team building toward the biggest tournament the country has ever hosted, this is shaping up to be one of the most significant periods in Kenyan football history.

For a nation that has often watched its neighbours dominate the continental conversation, the current storylines finally put Kenya at the centre of it.

Gor Mahia’s Record-Breaking Season

Gor Mahia closed out the 2025-26 FKF Premier League season in emphatic fashion, clinching their 22nd league title with two matches still to play. It is a record no other club in Kenyan football history can match, and it came after a season-long duel with AFC Leopards, who pushed hard but ultimately could not close the gap. The title was confirmed after AFC Leopards dropped crucial points against APS Bomet, sparking wild celebrations among Gor Mahia’s famously passionate supporters even before their own final fixture, a 1-0 loss to Nairobi United that did nothing to dampen the mood at Nyayo Stadium.

What makes this title particularly meaningful is the context around it. The 2025-26 campaign featured 18 clubs, and the competitiveness at both ends of the table was intense, with Bidco United and Sofapaka relegated after difficult seasons.

Ulinzi Stars striker Paul Okoth topped the scoring charts with 19 goals, a reminder that Kenyan football keeps producing sharp attacking talent outside its two biggest institutions. Gor Mahia’s triumph also earns them a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, giving Kenyan football a rare continental spotlight.

Harambee Stars Look Toward 2027

While club football has provided the headlines domestically, the national team’s story is arguably even bigger. Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, marking just the second time the tournament has been staged on East African soil. That alone would be a landmark moment, but there is a growing appetite within Kenyan football circles for Harambee Stars to do more than simply show up as hosts.

Government officials and the Football Kenya Federation have been vocal about wanting a competitive squad on the pitch, not just a well-run tournament off it. That pressure has translated into action: Harambee Stars conducted a recruitment mission in the United Kingdom earlier this year to identify eligible players who could strengthen the squad.

Head coach Benni McCarthy, who took charge in 2025, has overseen a team that has climbed the FIFA rankings under his stewardship, even after Kenya’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign ended without a place at the tournament.

The Qualifying Road Ahead

Kenya’s path to proving themselves worthy hosts starts with the AFCON 2027 qualifying draw, which placed the country in Pot 3 alongside Tanzania, Sudan, and Malawi. As co-hosts, Kenya faces no direct qualification pressure, but their group still includes opponents from each pot, including the possibility of facing one of the continent’s genuine heavyweights from Pot 1. The qualifiers run as a six-match schedule from September 2026 through March 2027, a real test of form ahead of the tournament Kenya will host.

The Squad Blending Experience with Fresh Legs

Captain Michael Olunga remains the team’s most influential figure, sitting second on Kenya’s all-time scoring list with 34 goals in 69 appearances, giving McCarthy a settled focal point up front. That experience is now being paired with newer recruits identified through the UK scouting mission earlier this year, a deliberate effort to widen the player pool beyond the domestic league.

The blend of a proven captain and fresh faces gives McCarthy a squad with both a settled spine and room to experiment as qualifying gets underway.

Why This Moment Matters for Kenyan Football

Taken together, Gor Mahia’s record-setting season and Harambee Stars’ build-up to AFCON 2027 represent something Kenyan football has needed for years: genuine, sustained momentum. It is rare for club and country storylines to align this well, and rarer still for a nation to have a home tournament sharpening the focus.

Fans wanting to follow every fixture, from the CAF Champions League run to the qualifiers, have no shortage of reasons to stay locked in, and for those tracking how the odds shift around these games, m88id.io offers coverage built with East African football fans in mind.

There is a sense among Kenyan football followers that this period could be looked back on as a turning point, the moment a talented generation and an ambitious federation started pulling together. Whether that turns into an AFCON 2027 campaign to remember is still to be seen, but the groundwork being laid now suggests Kenya is not just hosting the tournament, it is preparing to compete in it.
